The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado comes in three cab configurations: Regular Cab, which seats three, and Double and Crew Cabs, which seat up to six. A six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard and four-wheel drive is optional. There are three engine choices: a 4.3-liter V6, a 5.3-liter V8 and a 6.2-liter V8. The Silverado comes in four basic trims: WT, LT, LTZ and Crew Cab-only High Country. A Z71 off-road package is offered with the LT and LTZ trims. The Silverado 1500 is fully redesigned for 2014.

For the full-size-truck faithful, Chevy’s entry V-8 is a 5.3-liter unitmaking 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Its performance is unimpeachable, yet a stronger 6.2-liter V-8 will join the lineup later this year, likely with well over 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft. All three engines pair with a six-speed automatic transmission that times shifts well and executes them gracefully. And whether V-6 or V-8, all of the engines are capable of a seamless transition to V-4 operation during low-load cruising.

The engines may be new, but it’s the subtle refinements to the chassis that make the strongest impression. The Silverado possesses uncanny refinement for a vehicle that’s capable of hauling about a ton of dirt or towing up to 11,500 pounds of construction equipment. Body-on-frame trucks lack the three-dimensional rigidity of unibody cars and crossovers and the Silverado makes strides to quench the shudders that often plague pickups. Lift the hood and you’ll see braced corners in the engine compartment.

The cab uses more high-strength steel and is mounted to the frame with new shear body mounts that limit fore and aft movement. As a result, what were quaking reverberations are now quivering jitters. On Texas’s lumpy but unbroken pavement, the Silverado delivered a compliant ride with no head toss to speak of. Chevy’s truck is also as quiet as a Lexus SUV thanks to acoustic-laminated glass, triple-sealed doors, and lined front wheel wells.

Hard-Working Luxury

As with any full-size truck, Silverado variants span the gamut from vinyl-floored work trucks to luxury-SUV alternatives. On top of ventilated leather seats and a heated steering wheel, buyers can add safety technologies like forward collision warning, lane departure monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert that warn the driver with audible alarms and a vibrating seat. Chevrolet has also launched a new High Country model to challenge Ford’s King Ranch and Ram’s Laramie Longhorn. It features a saddle-brown leather interior, unique 20-inch wheels, its own grille, and high-end equipment. As for that aforementioned Texas Edition: It’s a set of badges paired with optional equipment that’s available on other trims.

We’re more partial to the functional add-ons like the integrated trailer-brake controller, factory spray-in bed liner, and the back-up camera that make towing and hauling that much easier. New options include a damped tailgate, upper tie-down hooks, and LED lighting under the bed rails that illuminates your cargo even if you’re using a tonneau cover.

Priced to Move

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado doesn’t have any glaring flaws. Its engines are strong, its chassis is stout, and its cabin is whisper quiet. But we have some doubts that it will be enough to convince folks to pass over Ford’s well-marketed EcoBoost engine or the Ram 1500’s comfortable coil-spring suspension. Chevrolet might have some doubts itself. On top of unchanged base prices from last year, Chevrolet will offer 2014 Silverado buyers free scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles. In true Texas spirit, we have to call that as we see it: That’s a sales incentive on a brand-new truck.

Chevrolet will air five 30-second commercials during Super Bowl XLV Sunday on FOX, representing only part of a coordinated TV presence that continues into a special post-game episode of “Glee,” the FOX hit musical comedy.

The Camaro, Cruze Eco, Silverado HD and Volt will be featured in a combination of in-game and post-game ads, plus Chevy is presenting a Camaro Convertible to the Most Valuable Player from Super Bowl.

“Chevrolet has a lot of great news to share right now, and where else do you get to talk to 95 million Americans all at once?” said Joel Ewanick, global chief marketing officer of General Motors. “Chevrolet is using the biggest broadcast day of the year, all day, to talk about the Volt, the North American Car of the Year; the Silverado HD, Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year; the 42-mile-per-gallon Cruze Eco; and the best-selling Camaro.”

One of the Super Bowl ads will promote an elaborate, longer-form Chevrolet spot to air during the “Glee” episode following the Super Bowl, where the classic song “See the U.S.A. in your Chevrolet” plays a key role in the plot of the commercial.

The following Chevrolet ads will air during the game: “Misunderstanding,” featuring the Cruze Eco; “Discovery,” highlighting the Volt; “Tommy,” highlighting the Silverado HD; and “Al’s Chevrolet,” starring the Camaro. The “Glee” commercial also will run during the game. “Ms. Evelyn,” featuring the Camaro, will air after the presentation of the MVP Award, also sponsored by Chevrolet. What’s New for 2014

Redesigned for 2014, the Chevrolet Silverado benefits from weight reduction and a lineup of new, more fuel-efficient engines including a now-competitive V6.

Introduction

Most people buy a full-size pickup truck with the idea that they can drive it every day and use it for heavy lifting and hauling when the need arises. That latter requirement necessitates some muscle. Traditionally, you’d pass on the pickup’s base V6 engine and spring for a substantially stronger but thirstier V8. But lately, automakers have been beefing up their trucks’ V6 engines. Now Chevy has joined the party. As such, one of the best things the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado has going for it is something the outgoing version lacked: a competitive V6 engine.

Of course, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 still offers V8 power as well, and they’re burly 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter mills that now benefit from direct fuel injection and cylinder deactivation for better power and efficiency. But for those who’d like the big Silverado’s generous passenger and cargo space and whose hauling and towing requirements aren’t as severe, the new 4.3-liter V6 should fit the bill. It makes 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque, and can tow up to 7,200 pounds when properly equipped. Fuel economy ratings are impressive as well, with an estimated 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.

In addition to the more potent V6 engine, the latest Chevy Silverado benefits from a diet as well. The new regular cab model with the V6 and a 6-foot, 6-inch pickup bed, for example, weighs 250 fewer pounds than its predecessor. Other enhancements include revised suspension tuning for a smoother ride, forward-hinged rear doors on extended cab models (they were awkward, reverse-opening half doors previously) and newly available safety features such as a forward collision alert system, a lane departure warning system and trailer sway control.

Meanwhile, the Silverado’s exterior design doesn’t stray far from tradition. A massive new grille, revised bumpers and more sculpted styling down the side give it a more modern, almost aerodynamic look, but it retains the square-jawed, all-business look of previous Chevy Silverados. Those who regularly haul a lot of people and cargo will be pleased to know that the Silverado 1500 crew cab now offers a 6.5-foot cargo box in addition to the previous 5.75-foot box. Inside, Chevrolet has upgraded the Silverado’s upholstery, dash and door-panel materials and now offers an 8-inch touchscreen display with the brand’s MyLink infotainment interface and smartphone integration.

All told, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is fully competitive with its longtime and similarly well-rounded rivals, the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 as well as the Toyota Tundra. This is especially true now that Chevy offers a V6 engine that promises ample performance along with good fuel economy. As such, your choice of a full-size pickup may come down to feature availability or even styling preference.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a full-size pickup offered in a variety of cab/cargo-bed configurations in both two- and four-wheel drive. Body styles include regular cab, extended (“Double”) cab and crew cab. Regular cabs can be had with either a 6.5-foot standard bed or an 8-foot bed. Extended cabs come with the 6.5-foot standard bed, while crew cabs can be had with either a 5.75-foot short bed or the 6.5-foot standard bed.

Regular cabs are limited to the base Work Truck and midlevel LT trims. The extended and crew cabs come in LT, LTZ, High Country and off-road-oriented Z71 trims.

The Work trim (or WT) comprises 1WT and 2WT subsets. The 1WT comes with 17-inch steel wheels, air-conditioning, cruise control, power windows and door locks, a tilt steering wheel, vinyl seating, rubber floor covering, a 40/20/40-split front bench seat and a four-speaker AM/FM sound system with USB and auxiliary inputs. The 2WT adds stainless-steel finish wheels, chrome bumpers and grille, deep-tint glass, power/heated mirrors, keyless entry, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, OnStar telematics and an upgraded MyLink audio system with a 4-inch color display, satellite radio, HD radio, Pandora radio, a CD player and voice control functionality.

Stepping up to the LT adds a chrome grille insert, an “E-Z” lift/lower tailgate, alloy wheels, cloth upholstery (with adjustable lumbar support for the driver), carpeting, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, and six speakers for the audio system.

The LTZ piles on chrome trim, 18-inch alloy wheels, remote starting, power folding mirrors, a power sliding rear window with defroster, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a rearview camera, a 110-volt power outlet, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated eight-way power driver and passenger front seats, driver-seat memory settings and an 8-inch touchscreen display for the MyLink interface.

In addition to the LTZ features, the High Country includes a unique grille, 20-inch wheels, front and rear parking sensors, cargo box tie-downs, a power sliding rear window, a Bose audio system, 10-way power front seats and ventilated front seats.

The Z71 trim, which is added atop the LT or LTZ, features off-road-oriented hardware such as special shock absorbers, a heavy-duty air cleaner, hill descent control, underbody shields, recovery hooks and a few unique exterior and interior styling tweaks.

Many of the features on the upper trim levels are offered on the lower ones as options while other available features (depending on the trim level and configuration) include towing packages, various axle ratios, a power sunroof, side steps, parking sensors, a navigation system and a rear-seat entertainment system with a Blu-Ray player. Notably, the Max Trailering package features an integrated trailer-brake controller, heavier-duty suspension calibration and a higher-capacity radiator.

Another key option group is the Driver Alert package that features lane departure warning, forward collision alert, safety alert seat and front and rear parking sensors. There are also the All Star Edition, Texas Edition and Custom Sport Edition, whose highlights (depending on the package) include 20-inch wheels, one of the available towing groups, remote starting, a power driver seat, a rearview camera and, of course, unique badging.

Powertrains and Performance

Standard on all but the LTZ trims is a 4.3-liter V6 with 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque. As with all other Silverado engines, it comes matched to a six-speed automatic transmission and either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. EPA fuel economy estimates stand at 20 mpg combined (18 city/24 highway) for two-wheel drive. With 4WD, they drop to 19/17/22. Maximum towing capacity, when properly equipped and depending on body style, can range up to a generous 7,600 pounds.

The 5.3-liter V8, which is standard on the LTZ trims and optional on other Silverados, makes 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Properly equipped, trucks with this engine can tow up to 11,500 pounds. With rear-wheel drive, the EPA says Silverados with the 5.3-liter V8 will achieve 19 mpg combined (16 city/23 highway). With 4WD they rate 18 combined. In Edmunds testing, a Silverado 1500 LT Z71 Crew Cab 2WD with the 5.3 sprinted from zero to 60 in just 6.8 seconds.

Optional on the LTZ and High Country trims is a 6.2-liter V8 that makes 420 hp and 460 lb-ft. Its fuel mileage estimates are 17 mpg combined (14 city/20 highway) while its maximum towing capacity stands at 12,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Safety

Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front and rear-seat side airbags, and side curtain airbags. Also standard is OnStar, which includes services such as automatic crash notification, roadside assistance, remote door unlocking and stolen vehicle assistance.

Options include a rearview camera, front and rear park assist and a suite of driver aids that include lane departure warning and forward collision alert.

In government crash tests, the 2014 Silverado earned a top five-star rating, with five stars awarded for both total frontal-impact safety and total side-impact safety. During Edmunds’ braking test, a Silverado Crew Cab 2WD came to a stop from 60 mph in 128 feet, a good performance for this type of vehicle.

Interior Design and Special Features

With this redesign, all-new cab structures bring improved structural stiffness and crashworthiness to the 2014 model. Chevy also improved the cabin quality on lower trims, where materials and build quality are both notably better. There are also more bins and cubbies than before and LTZ trims have up to five USB ports to keep all your devices charged and happy. The MyLink system features an 8-inch touchscreen, straightforward menus and effective voice command interface, although sometimes the system can be slow to respond to inputs.

With a choice of bench or buckets (depending on trim level) up front, as well as available heating, ventilation and adjustable lumbar support, the Silverado’s thickly padded seats promise plenty of long-trip comfort. Although the cab’s basic dimensions are unchanged from last year, there is a smidge more rear legroom than before, and front occupants have more fore/aft seat adjustment range.

Gone are the awkward reverse-opening rear doors of the previous extended cab; the newly minted double cab has traditional forward-hinged doors. The new cabin also rides on improved body mounts for reduced noise and vibration, while clambering into the bed is made easier by clever steps and handholds built into each rear corner.

Driving Impressions

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado’s new V6 provides ample thrust and is light-years ahead of the old V6 not only in terms of power and performance but refinement as well. Another indication of this engine’s all-around legitimacy is that it is available in all trim levels rather than relegated only to work truck variants, as was the case with the old V6.

As you’d expect, the 5.3-liter V8 delivers solid thrust with good manners, though there’s still a bit of vibration during hard acceleration. More seamless than ever, however, is the fuel-saving cylinder deactivation system, which swaps between V8 and V4 modes with complete transparency.

The six-speed automatic provides smooth and timely gearchanges in normal driving. But despite the pull of the Silverado’s huskier new engines, we’ve noticed that there’s still too big a gap between the transmission’s gear ratios when towing. There are rumors of an upcoming eight-speed transmission — it would be a welcome addition. That said, we’ve towed a trailer with an 8,600-pound load with a Silverado equipped with the 5.3-liter V8 and the Max Trailering package and there was plenty of reserve grunt.

Overall ride and handling dynamics are noticeably improved over the old truck. The 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 feels robust structurally, yet most versions are compliant and comfortable over broken pavement, though the stiffer ride on trucks with the Max Trailering package can grow tiresome. The Silverado is also very quiet, with road and wind noise both minimal even at freeway speeds.

The Chevy isn’t exactly agile around turns and there’s plenty of body lean if you push it harder, as you’d likely expect. But in normal driving it feels confident enough and the steering is well-weighted. Off-road, the Silverado shudders less when bouncing around on rocky trails, exhibiting better composure than ever before.

Reviewers praise the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 for its comfortable ride, well-designed interior and range of refined and powerful engine choices, which they say make it a strong contender in the full-size pickup truck segment.

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 comes standard with a V6 engine that reviewers say provides ample power for towing light trailers and day-to-day driving. Car companies that offer huge discounts on models early in the year have a problem. They have to decide on ways to get slow-selling vehicles off the lots. The Chevy Silverado, General Motors’ (NYSE: GM) most successful vehicle based on unit sales, has such a large number of discounts to its sales price for President’s Day that something has to be very wrong.
The Silverado is the second best selling vehicle in the U.S. after Ford’s (NYSE: F) perennial front-running F-150. The Silverado’s sales are also pressured by another pickup — the Dodge Ram, which is the Chrysler flagship. The three top the list of best selling vehicles in America, ahead of the first place car — Toyota’s (NYSE: TM) Camry.

In January, Ford sold 46.536 F-150s flat compare with a year ago. The pickup’s new model, made mostly of aluminum, which lowers its weight by almost 700 pounds, has earned a number of positive reviews.  The Silverado’s sales were 28,926, off more than 18% from January 2013. Pressuring the Silverado from below, the Ram’s sales were 25,071 — up 22%. The Silverado could drop out of second place as soon as this month, if the trends continue.

The stunning set of discounts for the Silverado drops the price of its Double Cab All-Star Edition from $37,520 to $30,428 for President’s Day. This includes  a $3,900 Presidents Day Cash Allowance and a $2,442 Presidents Day Discount.

Silverado sales are not the only problem for the No. 1 U.S. auto maker. GM posted relatively poor earnings for the fourth quarter of 2013. Like all of the other large car companies in the U.S., it relies heavily on a small number of vehicles for the majority of its sales. Cars like the Corvette may get substantial press coverage, but they sell only a few thousand units a year. 

Based on January sales, Chevy has only three vehicles among the 20 top selling cars and light trucks: the Silverado, Cruze  and Equinox . Rival Ford has five vehicles on the list; Toyota has four. These numerical advantages show just how much GM leans on the Silverado. For now, it does not have much to lean on.

The first gets people to laugh. The second gets them to think. But it’s my third tip that’s most important for those looking to buy an older used car:

• Don’t believe the hype.

Cars from prestige brands (especially European ones) don’t necessarily last longer or work better. In fact, they now represent many of the most costly and least reliable vehicles in the used-car marketplace. The exact opposite is true for certain unpopular brands and models. Defunct automakers such as Saturn, Saab, and Pontiac have certain specific models that can equal — or exceed — the quality of the so-called market leaders.

 Consumers often agonize about what vehicle should be their next car. When it comes to older used cars in particular, I have always offered buyers three ironclad pieces of advice:

• Your footwear is going to have a greater impact on your life than the car you drive.

• The driving and maintenance habits of the prior owner will have a far greater effect on a used car’s longevity than the brand. So whatever you choose, make sure you have it inspected before you buy.

Last week, I talked about a study my partners and I used to find the vehicles that came up defective or broken most often at used vehicle auctions. That same data also reveals the most durable cars and trucks over several years, and with results that defy popular wisdom.

To give you a grasp of how divergent our findings have become versus the usual stereotypes, the Chevrolet Cavalier, a car not generally associated with quality, has registered more trade-ins with over 180,000 miles, and fewer defect issues, than the entire Volkswagen line-up. Other models that are no longer sold as new cars, such as the Buick Park Avenue and Saturn L200, are apparently capable of matching the overall quality of their classes’ top-tier vehicles for thousands of dollars less.

There are plenty of good used vehicles out there that are capable of offering the highest levels of long-term quality and owner satisfaction. However, since manufacturers often sell multiple vehicles over the same platform, to increase reliability and lower cost, for this study we have decided to broaden the field a bit and highlight the ten most successful platforms. This way those less popular models in our study don’t get overlooked.

1. Lexus LX470/Toyota Land Cruiser

These vehicles are the automotive version of granite. They are heavy as hell, don’t age and will most assuredly squash whatever vehicular bugs and cockroaches are on the road should the Zombie Apocalypse ever take place. The Land Cruiser and LX470 are the best on our list.

2. Ford E-Series

While GM only offered a mild redesign of their full-sized vans back in 1995, and Dodge left the segment entirely, Ford decided to double down by improving the vehicle’s interior design several times over, and then sticking with three engines that Ford has collectively put into over 10 million vehicles (the 4.6-liter V-8, the Trition 5.4-liter V-8, and the 6.8-liter V-10).

The end result is the best-selling full-sized van in today’s market, and one whose durability has been earned the hard way. A true workhorse that is kept instead of curbed.  And to keep the momentum going Ford has introduced the Transit connect – a 21st century look and design for today’s global business environment transportation needs.

3. Lexus LS

The LS400, LS430 and LS460 are among the only ultra high-end luxury models that buck the trend of having dubious reliability and maintenance issues upon trade-in. No luxury car in our study, on average, is driven longer with more miles on the odometer, and fewer defects, than the Lexus LS series.

4. Chevy/GMC full-sized trucks and SUV’s

Toyota and Lexus finished first and second in the Manufacturer Quality Index Rating. But guess who finished third? GMC.

With GMC only selling trucks and SUVs, all of which are also sold by Chevrolet, the two have combined to offer outstanding quality and durability that few others can match, which is one of the main reasons why GM trucks have remained so dominant. Suburbans, Chevy Silverado, Tahoes, Yukons and a long list of other makes and models are all part of the GMT platform which has remained at the forefront of vehicle longevity.

5. Ford full-sized trucks (V-8 and V-10 models)While Dodge remains a distant third, and Toyota and Nissan have barely made a dent in the full-size truck business, Ford has become Chevy’s equal in the segment, and in certain cases, now the superior choice. The now defunct Ford Excursion holds the title as the third most reliable full-sized SUV in our study (the Land Cruiser and LX are first and second). Meanwhile  the Ford F-Series is based on the P-platform which regularly yields that V-8, rear-wheel drive, body-on-frame combination that has made the F-150 the best selling vehicle in America for 32 years running.

6. Toyota Camry / Lexus ES / Toyota Avalon

We found in our year-long study that the Honda Accord has experienced a rash of transmission issues with V-6 models, and the Nissan Altima had severe oil consumption issues with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The Toyota Camry is the only midsized vehicle to remain consistently well above average for the last twenty years (click the charthere.) The mid-’90s to mid-2000s Lexus ES and Toyota Avalons are based on the Camry XV platform which laid the foundation for other standouts from this era, including the Toyota Solara and Sienna. The Avalon is the second-highest ranked car in our study.

7. Toyota 4Runner / Lexus GX470

We should mention that there have been two major platforms for older 4Runners. The older 4Runner was based on the Toyota truck and then later, an overseas model known as the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. In 2003, Toyota decided to offer the North American only 4Runner with it’s very own platform and added a Lexus variant. Both 4Runners are a cut above in terms of long-term reliability. The 4Runner and GX470 are ranked 5th and 8th respectfully while the older Toyota truck rounds off the top ten.

8. Honda S2000

Only 65,000 S2000s were built over a ten year period, and yet they remain neck-and-neck with the Mazda MX-5 Miata as the most popular roadster of the past decade. The S2000 has the distinct honor of being among the few on our list that are exceptionally reliable and fun to drive.

9. Toyota Prius

While the S2000 has served as a fun car for the enthusiast, the Prius has become the car of choice for planet-lovers and hipsters. Fewer than 4 percent of Prii that are traded-in exhibit any type of serious mechanical issue, and that includes problems with the hybrid battery.
While the older Honda Civic Hybrid and Accord hybrid have all experienced substantial battery wear, the Prius remains among the most reliable vehicles in the marketplace by any standard.

10. Lexus GS

It was our hope to make this list a bit more diverse by incorporating platforms instead of single models, since Toyota has so far managed to nail down eight of the top ten slots in our long-term reliability study.

The good news is that this platform based list offers over 40 distinct models to choose from, both imports and domestic, and certain popular media favorites such as the Honda Accord and Toyota RAV4 can no longer obscure major mechanical defects that don’t take hold until after most first owners sell their vehicles. The bad news for Toyota haters, however, is that yet another Toyota product —the Lexus GS — rounds off the list. The GS was based on the Japan-only Toyota Crown and Toyota Aristo for most of it’s life, and it’s the seventh rear-wheel-drive platform to land in the top ten in our list of best long-term reliability.

Essentially, the Z/28 is a stripped-out, beefed-up, maximum-grade version of the Camaro that’s happiest on a racetrack. But should all this seem like too much (whether in terms of specs or price), know that any Camaro is still going to be loads of fun. Alas, there are some downsides endemic to the Camaro. Seeing out of the thing, for instance, is one of the car’s more distracting elements. The tiny windows look great from the outside, but they result in poor outward visibility. Then again, limited practicality is pretty much a given with a muscle car. The Dodge Challenger and the Ford Mustang are two names that have gone head-to-head with the Camaro for years and they both offer different strengths. The Mustang provides similar performance for less money and is still our favorite pick for base V6 and V8 models, but the ZL1 is better than the GT500, and there’s no Mustang equivalent to the new Z/28 this year. The Challenger, meanwhile, is the roomiest and most comfortable in this group, but it does feel significantly larger and less nimble to drive. As an alternative to all of the above, Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe might be worth a look.

Whichever performance car you settle on, know that the Camaro will turn heads on a regular basis and will seldom fail to put a smile on your face.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2014 Chevy Camaro is available in both four-seat coupe and convertible body styles. There are eight trim levels, including the V6-powered 1LS/2LS and 1LT/2LT, the V8-powered 1SS/2SS and high-performance ZL1. Topping out the range is the ultra-performance Z/28. The 1LS/2LS and Z/28 models are available only as a hardtop coupe, while all other Camaro models are available as a coupe or convertible.

Standard equipment on the entry-level 1LS includes 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, keyless entry, air-conditioning, manually adjustable front seats with power recline, cruise control, a manual tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth phone connectivity, OnStar and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, auxiliary audio input jack and satellite radio. The 2LS adds an automatic transmission.

The 1LT tacks on foglights, remote start (automatic transmission models only), eight-way power front seats, a 7-inch touchscreen with smartphone app integration (Chevy’s “MyLink”) and Bluetooth audio connectivity. Most equipment on the 2LT is optional on the 1LT, so the main distinction between these two trims is leather upholstery, which is not available on the 1LT.

The 1SS is equipped similarly to the 1LT but adds a V8 engine, a limited-slip differential, 20-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The 2SS essentially combines the 1SS model’s performance bits with the 2LT’s convenience and luxury features. The 1LE Performance package available only on manual transmission-equipped SS models includes racetrack-inspired hardware upgrades including unique gearing, suspension tuning and tires.

The ZL1 is equipped similarly to the 2SS but adds several performance upgrades in the form of a supercharged V8, Brembo brakes, adaptive magnetic suspension dampers, unique 20-inch wheels with performance summer tires and retuned power steering. Exterior styling features include a functional carbon-fiber air extractor for the hood as well as a unique rear spoiler and unique front and rear fascias. Inside the cabin you’ll find simulated suede upholstery and a smaller, flat-bottomed steering wheel.

The RS package (available on all trims but the 1LS/2LS and ZL1) adds 20-inch wheels, a rear spoiler and xenon headlights. A sunroof is optional on all coupe models except the LS, while a variety of exterior stripes and trim detailing are available across the board. A stripped-out, ultra-high-performance version of the Camaro, the new Z/28 weighs a claimed 300 pounds fewer than the ZL1 thanks to a variety of weight-saving measures, including reduced sound-deadening material and the deletion of the air-conditioning system (don’t worry, you can get it back as an option). The Z/28 Camaro comes with a larger, more powerful V8 engine, special lightweight 19-inch wheels, a special race-oriented suspension, performance tires and carbon-ceramic brakes. The 2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 is only offered with a six-speed manual transmission. Xenon headlights and foglights are not available and the car’s minimalist stereo has only one speaker.

Powertrains and Performance

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro LS and LT are powered by a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 323 hp and 278 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a six-speed automatic is optional. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 20 mpg combined (17 mpg city/28 mpg highway) with the manual transmission. The automatic transmission equipped on the 1LS, 1LT and 2LT returns an EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined, while the automatic transmission on the 2LS has a longer final-drive ratio and gets 21 mpg.

The Camaro SS has a 6.2-liter V8 that produces 426 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque with the standard six-speed manual and 400 hp and 410 lb-ft with the six-speed automatic. With the manual, the SS hits 60 mph in 4.8 seconds; EPA-estimated fuel economy is 19 mpg combined (16 mpg city/24 mpg highway). The automatic is only slightly less fuel-efficient at 18 mpg combined.

The Camaro ZL1 boasts a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 with 580 hp and 556 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, with a six-speed automatic optional. In Edmunds track testing, the ZL1 accelerated from zero to 60 mph in a very quick 4.4 seconds. Fuel mileage estimates are 16 mpg combined with the manual transmission and 14 mpg with the automatic.

The Camaro Z/28 gets a 7.0-liter V8 with an estimated 500 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. A six speed manual is the only transmission available.

Safety

Every 2014 Chevy Camaro comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Also standard is the OnStar telematics system, which includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation.

In government crash tests, the Camaro earned a top five-star rating overall, with five stars for front crash protection and five stars for side-impact protection.

In brake testing, a Chevy Camaro SS with the 1LE came to a stop from 60 mph in 108 feet, while a ZL1 Convertible did it in 107 feet. Both are excellent distances, but keep in mind that both of these test cars had summer performance tires. Camaros with all-season tires likely won’t stop as short.

Interior Design and Special Features

Old-school pony cars weren’t known for their jazzy interiors, but the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro makes a clean break with that tradition. Done up with a number of retro touches like square bezels around the gauges, the overall effect is stylish despite the use of a little too much hard plastic. Outward visibility, though, is hampered by thick roof pillars and a low roof line, and you’ll want to make sure you can live with this aspect of Chevy Camaro ownership during your test-drive.

The Camaro’s touchscreen display interface features a clean layout and intuitive menu structure, and it allows control of smartphone radio apps, such as Pandora and Stitcher. Unfortunately, the interface can prove frustrating to use at times, as reactions to touch inputs are occasionally slow or missed entirely.

While the front seats are comfortable enough, the Camaro’s rear seat is the smallest among its rivals. The trunk is equally tiny at just 11.3 cubic feet, and that space can’t be expanded due to the absence of fold-down rear seatbacks. The smallish trunk opening also makes loading and unloading of larger items a frustrating experience.

The Camaro Convertible has 10.2 cubic feet of trunk capacity with the top up and dips below 8 cubes with the top down. Driving Impressions

No matter which engine you choose, no one will ever accuse your 2014 Chevrolet Camaro of being slow. Buying a V6 Camaro isn’t the stigma it used to be. The V6 is responsive and revs freely, and the exhaust note is pleasingly sporty. Still, the V8 better fits the Camaro’s tough guy persona with its tire-shredding power and thundering sound. All of that goes double for the supercharged ZL1.

Driven around turns, the Camaro grips hard and steers with precision. It’s not the easiest car to see out of, and there’s a lot of weight to manage, but by and large the Camaro is pretty talented on twisty roads. The world-class ZL1, however, is in another league entirely. Not only does it deliver acceleration on par with exotic supercars costing many thousands more, but its adaptive suspension and upgraded Brembo brakes make it equally well-mannered on the racetrack and your daily commute.
